Qualifications

·         Apprenticeship or equivalent education preferred or two to four years on the job training in pipefitting

·         Minimum of two years of experience is required

·         Must be able to obtain/maintain silver-brazing certificate (silver-braze Grade III, IV, V) and/or welding certificate

·         Knowledge of basic marine piping systems, blueprint reading, silver-brazing procedures and military specifications

·         Ability to perform marine pipefitting and bending, burning, use of power tools, read blueprints and follow exact tolerances

·         Must be able to access and move around ship safely, work at heights and in confined spaces with limited visibility

Essential Job Tasks & Responsibilities

·         Installs and maintains ships' piping systems such as steam, heating and cooling, hot and cold water, hydraulic, air, fuel and oil lines, following blueprints, layouts, and work orders, and using hand tools and in shop machines

·         Plans layout of pipe sections, cuts and bores hole in bulkheads and decks for installation of pipes

·         Operates shop machines to cut and thread pipe and pipe fittings, including valves, traps and thermostats

·         Bends pipe to specified shapes using pipe-bending machines, bolts or welds brackets to support pipe systems

·         Connects pipes to equipment such as heat exchanges, laundry and galley equipment, pumps, tanks and other ship equipment

·         Repairs, packs and adjusts valves

·         Tests installed systems for leaks and to ensure that system meets specifications

·         Reads and understands blueprints for application to assigned tasks

·         Sets up work area with appropriate tools and materials in shop or on board ship

·         Cuts, bends, welds, brazes, grinds, and/or burns pipes to fit and connect for shipboard installation

·         Installs and/or removes pipe

·         Inspects and tags out piping systems; air tests tanks/void; hydrostatical tests the piping system and equipment

·         Thorough understanding of flow of paperwork to include timecard completion & IPI.

·         Adheres to all PACSHIP organizational policies and procedures.

·         Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, bend, crouch, crawl, and twist. Climb stairs, scaffolding, and inclined and vertical ladders. Work at heights and in confined spaces.  Use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate equipment.  Reach, push and pull with hands and arms.  Lift up to 50 pounds.  Talk and hear, both in person and by telephone.

Working Conditions: 80-100% of work takes place outside in weather conditions; in an industrial shipyard environment; on docks, piers, scaffolding; and onboard ships. Employees work in close proximity with moving machinery, mechanical parts, and vehicles and will have exposure to prolonged loud noise which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. Employees may handle hazardous material or have exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, biological hazards, and airborne fumes.
